Lesson 7

Desmos as a Strategy

Desmos is embedded in the digital SAT testing app on every math question. Students who treat it as a backup calculator leave points behind; students who treat it as a solving strategy do not.

  • Systems of equations. Type both, read the intersection. No substitution, no elimination.
  • Quadratic zeros and vertices. Type the equation and read the labeled points off the graph.
  • Where two functions are equal. Graph both and find the crossing.
  • Inequalities. Type it and the solution region shades itself.
  • Ugly arithmetic. It is a calculator too.

A question asking for the value of k that makes a system have no solution, or that makes a quadratic have exactly one root, can be answered by typing the equation with k in it. Desmos offers to add a slider. Drag it and watch what happens, which is often faster and more certain than reasoning about discriminants.

Quiz now, while it is fresh. 9 questions, no timer.

Other Deep Dive Courses

Built the same way, and every one of them is included.

And if the thing you need is not on the shelf at all, the Topic Genie builds a full course on anything you name, with the same lessons, questions and review schedule as this one. Beta testers get a code the day they join.

Who builds this

Built by a teacher who became a National Certified Counselor.

OmniTaught is developed by Michael C. Shedrick, M.S., PLPC, NCC: a teacher with a master's degree in educational leadership who went on to become a National Certified Counselor. Both jobs kept exposing the same problem: learning tools that stop at definitions. So this course teaches the working version of its subject, the part you actually use when the real thing is in front of you, and it teaches it the way memory works: a short lesson, a quiz while it is still fresh, and review that brings it back before you lose it.

Also from the same desk, in case they are useful: OmniPsyche Counseling Tools, which preps your next session and not just your notes; OmniPsyche.org, free mental health education with no paywall and no signup; and NOTICE, a free guided meditation app.

What this course covers

Every lesson is short enough to finish in one sitting and ends with questions that make you use what you just read. The last ones are timed, in exam conditions.

Linear Word Problems and Inequalities

Translate the words, watch the flip, answer what they asked

Words into math, one phrase at a time

Word problems are translation exercises. Build the dictionary: 'of' means multiply, 'per' marks a rate that becomes your slope, 'is' means equals, 'at least' means greater than or equal, 'at most' and 'no more than' mean less than or equal, and 'less than' flips the order, so '7 less than x' is x - 7, not 7 - x.

Key idea

Define variables with units and a time frame before writing any equation. Let m = the number of months beats let m = money every time. Half of all word-problem errors are really variable-definition errors.

The two-equation setup

Ticket, coin, and mixture problems all use the same skeleton: a count equation and a value equation. If a adult and c child tickets sell, then a + c = total tickets, and (adult price)a + (child price)c = total revenue. Two equations, two unknowns, one intersection.

Remember

Any two-unknown word problem becomes a Desmos problem the moment you write the equations. Rename the variables x and y, type both lines, and tap the intersection. You can also test an inequality by typing it into Desmos and plugging candidate values, or by graphing it and looking at the shaded region.

Inequalities: one rule with teeth

Inequalities behave exactly like equations with a single exception: multiplying or dividing both sides by a negative number flips the inequality sign. Adding and subtracting never flip anything. When you solve -3x > 15, the answer is x < -5, and the flipped sign is the entire point of the question.

Careful

Two classic traps. First, answer the quantity that was asked: if you solved for adult tickets and they asked for child tickets, the wrong answer is sitting in the choices waiting for you. Second, respect rounding direction: a budget that allows 12.5 months of membership buys only 12 whole months.

Key idea

Rounding direction in one line: capacity questions round down (how many boxes fit) and requirement questions round up (how many trips are needed). The context, not the arithmetic, decides.

When translation feels tangled, backsolve. Take a middle answer choice, push it through the story, and see whether the total comes out high or low. Two plugs usually corner the answer, and the story itself checks your work.

A theater sells 200 tickets. Adult tickets cost $12, child tickets cost $7, and total sales are $2,150. How many child tickets were sold?

Questions people ask

Is there an app for practicing SAT Math?

Yes. OmniTaught opens in any browser and installs to a phone or a computer like an app, and it works offline once you have opened it. SAT Math: Deep Dive is 11 lessons, 110 practice questions and 59 flashcards, and the first week is free with no card.

What does SAT Math: Deep Dive cover?

Linear to nonlinear, with Desmos doing the heavy lifting. It is 11 lessons long, plus 1 timed exam set in exam conditions, and every lesson ends with questions on what you just read.

How long is each lesson?

About 6 minutes. There are 11 of them, so the reading comes to about 68 minutes in total, and it is built to be done a lesson at a time rather than in one sitting.

How much practice is in it?

110 practice questions, every one with an explanation of why the right answer is right, plus 59 flashcards that come back on a schedule built from how well you knew them last time.

What does it cost?

Nothing for the first week, and no card is asked for. After that OmniTaught is $9.99 a month or $79 a year, which opens every course on the site, this one included, plus one Genie course a month.

Free for a week. Then $9.99 a month.

No card to start.
