Lesson 7

Comparing Two Authors Directly

One of the four sets is usually paired: two shorter passages by different authors on a related subject, with questions on each and then questions on both.

Read Passage A and answer only the Passage A questions. Then read Passage B and answer its questions. Then take the comparison questions last. Holding both passages in mind while reading is what makes this set feel hard, and the layout usually groups the questions to allow this.

Name the relationship before you read the choices: In your own words: do they agree, disagree, or talk past each other, and about what exactly? Then find the option matching what you named. Reading the options first invites the strongest-sounding one, which is usually too strong.

Quiz now, while it is fresh. 9 questions, no timer.

Built the same way, and every one of them is included.

And if the thing you need is not on the shelf at all, the Topic Genie builds a full course on anything you name, with the same lessons, questions and review schedule as this one. Beta testers get a code the day they join.

Who builds this

Built by a teacher who became a National Certified Counselor.

OmniTaught is developed by Michael C. Shedrick, M.S., PLPC, NCC: a teacher with a master's degree in educational leadership who went on to become a National Certified Counselor. Both jobs kept exposing the same problem: learning tools that stop at definitions. So this course teaches the working version of its subject, the part you actually use when the real thing is in front of you, and it teaches it the way memory works: a short lesson, a quiz while it is still fresh, and review that brings it back before you lose it.

Also from the same desk, in case they are useful: OmniPsyche Counseling Tools, which preps your next session and not just your notes; OmniPsyche.org, free mental health education with no paywall and no signup; and NOTICE, a free guided meditation app.

Literal Questions: Find and Prove

If you cannot point to it, do not pick it

The most missable easy questions on the test

Literal questions ask what the passage states. According to the passage, the passage indicates, the author states: these stems promise that the answer sits in the text, word for word or nearly so. Students still miss them, not because the finding is hard but because they skip the proving.

Key idea

Every literal question has a proof line: a specific sentence you can put your finger on that makes one answer right. Your job is find, then prove. An answer you cannot physically point to is a guess wearing a suit.

The find step uses your passage map. The question mentions the failed harvest? Your map says paragraph four covers the drought years. Go there, read five lines, and the proof line surfaces. Without a map, the find step becomes a full reread under time pressure.

The paraphrase trap

Correct answers on the ACT are usually paraphrases: the passage says 'the practice fell out of favor' and the credited answer says 'the method became less popular.' Wrong answers often do the reverse trick, recycling exact words from the passage while twisting the meaning. Familiar vocabulary is not evidence. Matching meaning is.

Remember

Match meaning, not words. An option stuffed with phrases copied from the passage is more likely a trap than a gift. Translate the proof line into your own words first, then look for the option that says the same thing.

Watch for scope shifts in wrong answers. The passage says some nineteenth-century painters resisted photography; the trap says painters resisted photography. The passage says the drug reduced symptoms in trials; the trap says the drug cures the disease. Extreme words like all, never, only, and proves should trigger an automatic check against the proof line.

Careful

Do not answer from memory, even when you are sure. Memory smooths passages into what they probably said, and test writers build wrong answers out of exactly those smoothed versions. Ten seconds of rereading beats a confident miss.

Pace the habit: find the location from your map, reread the local lines, translate the proof line, match it to an option, and glance at the remaining options to confirm they fail. With practice this loop takes thirty seconds and yields near-perfect accuracy on literal questions.

Passage: The lighthouse keeper's logbook records seventeen storms in 1893, but only three entries mention damage to the tower itself. Most pages instead catalog small repairs to the supply boat, which the keeper described as 'the true lifeline of this station.' Question: According to the passage, the majority of the logbook entries concern
