The Naysayers: Negation Prefixes
un-, dis-, mis-, anti-, contra-
Meet the five prefixes that love to say no. Each one negates, but each has its own personality. Knowing which no is which turns confusing words into obvious ones.
Un- is the simple reverser: not, or undo. Unhappy is not happy. Unlock undoes the lock. Dis- means apart or the opposite of, and it often carries attitude: disagree, dishonest, dismiss. Hook: dis- sounds like 'diss', and dissing someone is the opposite of respect.
Mis- means wrongly or badly, not simply 'not'. A misprint is not a missing print, it is a wrong print. Misjudge, misplace, misinform: all doing something, just doing it badly. Hook: mis- = messed up.
Anti- means against, an active opponent. Antifreeze fights freezing. An antihero works against the hero mold. Antibodies are your body's security team fighting invaders. Hook: anti- is always picking a fight.
Contra- also means against or opposite, but in a more formal, side-by-side way. To contradict is to speak against someone. A contrarian takes the opposite position on purpose. Controversy is literally a turning against. Hook: contra- loves a debate podium, anti- loves a protest sign.
Watch out: not every un- or dis- word is a negation (uncle, dish). Check whether removing the prefix leaves a real word with related meaning. Unkind minus un- is kind. Uncle minus un- is... cle. Not a brick, just a coincidence.
