Lesson 8

Writing: Usage and Sentence Correction

Forty selected-response items across two formats: usage questions with underlined portions where you find the error, and sentence correction where you choose the best version. The same rules drive both.

The subject is separated from the verb by a prepositional phrase, a clause, or an inserted list. Cross out everything between them. A prepositional phrase never contains the subject: in "the collection of rare books," the subject is collection.

  • Compound subjects with and take a plural verb.
  • Compound subjects with or or nor agree with the nearer subject.
  • Indefinite pronouns like each, everyone, either, and neither are singular, however plural they feel.
  • Collective nouns like team, committee, and family are usually singular in American usage.

Who builds this

Built by a teacher who became a National Certified Counselor.

OmniTaught is developed by Michael C. Shedrick, M.S., PLPC, NCC: a teacher with a master's degree in educational leadership who went on to become a National Certified Counselor. Both jobs kept exposing the same problem: learning tools that stop at definitions. So this course teaches the working version of its subject, the part you actually use when the real thing is in front of you, and it teaches it the way memory works: a short lesson, a quiz while it is still fresh, and review that brings it back before you lose it.

Also from the same desk, in case they are useful: OmniPsyche Counseling Tools, which preps your next session and not just your notes; OmniPsyche.org, free mental health education with no paywall and no signup; and NOTICE, a free guided meditation app.

Writing: Grammar the Test Actually Tests

Usage, sentence correction, and research skills

The test does not test all of grammar

Praxis Core Writing (5723) has two halves: 40 selected-response questions in 40 minutes, plus two 30-minute essays that you should practice separately on paper. The multiple-choice half draws from a short, learnable list. You are not being tested on every rule of English. You are being tested on the handful of errors that show up constantly in professional writing, which is exactly the writing you will do as a teacher.

Key idea

The shortlist: subject-verb agreement, pronoun clarity and agreement, parallelism, modifier placement, punctuation, commonly confused words, and research skills. Master seven things, not all of English.

Agreement and pronouns

Agreement errors hide the subject behind a prepositional phrase. In 'the set of rubrics was updated,' the subject is 'set,' not 'rubrics,' so the verb is singular. Words like each, neither, and everyone are singular too. Pronoun questions test clarity: in 'When Ms. Lee met with Dana's mother, she explained the plan,' the sentence never says who 'she' is, and on this test an unclear pronoun is a wrong pronoun.

Parallelism, modifiers, and punctuation

Items in a list must share a grammatical shape: 'planning lessons, managing behavior, and using technology,' not 'planning lessons, behavior, and to use technology.' Modifiers must sit next to what they describe: 'Walking to the bus loop, the backpack strap broke' claims the strap was walking, and the fix is giving the opening phrase a logical subject to touch.

In punctuation, the comma splice is the test's favorite: two complete sentences joined by only a comma. Repair it with a period, a semicolon, or a comma plus a conjunction such as and, but, or so. Apostrophes follow ownership: the student's desk, the students' hallway, and its (possessive) versus it's (it is).

Careful

Commonly confused words are free points if you drill them: affect (usually a verb) versus effect (usually a noun), their, there, and they're, its versus it's, and fewer (countable) versus less (uncountable). Misusing one in a parent email costs credibility; misusing one here costs a question.

Research skills are the part people forget to study. Several questions test research literacy, not grammar.

  • Know the parts of a citation: author, year, title, publication, volume and issue, and pages.
  • Know that quotations need quotation marks and a citation, and that paraphrased ideas still need a citation because the ideas belong to their author.
  • Know how to rank sources: a peer-reviewed study beats a company's product page, which beats an anonymous post.
Remember

Every skill here has a classroom twin. Agreement and pronouns keep your IEP notes legally precise. Punctuation and confused words keep your parent emails professional. Citation skills carry you through your credential program and any graduate work after it. You are not studying for a test; you are rehearsing the writing your career runs on.
